C&rsquo;est la signature \u00e9lectronique qui valide et authentifie tout aujourd&rsquo;hui : des mises \u00e0 jour logicielles de nos infrastructures critiques aux <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegreenbow.com\/fr\/ressource\/video\/cryptographie-post-quantique-comment-la-banque-de-france-anticipe-le-q-day\/\">transactions bancaires<\/a>, en passant par les contrats num\u00e9riques et les connexions TLS (HTTPS) de nos sites web. Si ces signatures venaient \u00e0 \u00eatre falsifi\u00e9es par la puissance d&rsquo;un ordinateur quantique, c&rsquo;est toute l&rsquo;int\u00e9grit\u00e9 de nos \u00e9changes, la tra\u00e7abilit\u00e9 de nos documents officiels, l&rsquo;authenticit\u00e9 de nos identit\u00e9s et la souverainet\u00e9 de nos entreprises qui s&rsquo;effondreraient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Pourquoi le NIST prolonge-t-il le concours ?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>C&rsquo;est pour conjurer ce sc\u00e9nario que le NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) m\u00e8ne un marathon mondial depuis 2016 pour standardiser la <strong>cryptographie post-quantique<\/strong> (<strong>PQC<\/strong>). Si un premier bloc d&rsquo;algorithmes a d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 valid\u00e9 (comme ML-DSA), le NIST continue de chercher des alternatives pour diversifier les lignes de d\u00e9fense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le processus vient d&rsquo;ailleurs de franchir une \u00e9tape cruciale avec l&rsquo;annonce officielle du passage au Round 3 de ce concours de signatures additionnelles. Le 14 mai dernier, le NIST a annonc\u00e9 les <a href=\"https:\/\/nvlpubs.nist.gov\/nistpubs\/ir\/2026\/NIST.IR.8610.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">r\u00e9sultats du Round 2<\/a> : sur les 14 algorithmes encore en course, 9 candidats ont \u00e9t\u00e9 retenus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On pourrait se demander : pourquoi continuer \u00e0 chercher alors que le NIST a d\u00e9j\u00e0 standardis\u00e9 des algorithmes de signature comme ML-DSA (FIPS 204) ? La r\u00e9ponse tient en deux mots : <strong>diversit\u00e9 <\/strong>et <strong>agilit\u00e9<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deux des trois standards PQC s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s (FALCON et DILITHIUM) reposent sur les r\u00e9seaux euclidiens (lattices en anglais). Le NIST souhaite cependant \u00e9viter de r\u00e9p\u00e9ter l&rsquo;erreur du mod\u00e8le actuel, dont la d\u00e9pendance critique envers la factorisation d&rsquo;entiers fragilise l&rsquo;ensemble du chiffrement mondial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&rsquo;objectif de ce concours de signatures additionnelles est donc de trouver des alternatives robustes bas\u00e9es sur d&rsquo;autres concepts math\u00e9matiques, tout en recherchant des compromis plus avantageux en termes de taille de cl\u00e9 et de signature pour nos protocoles web (TLS, SSH, DNSSEC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Avantages et Inconv\u00e9nients des 9 rescap\u00e9s du Round 3<\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Ces 9 candidats se r\u00e9partissent en 4 grandes familles math\u00e9matiques, chacune pr\u00e9sentant des compromis de performance sp\u00e9cifiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D&rsquo;abord, la famille des <strong>isog\u00e9nies<\/strong> (repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e par <strong>SQIsign<\/strong>) offre l&rsquo;avantage de cl\u00e9s et de signatures extr\u00eamement compactes (une signature peut ne mesurer que 148 octets au niveau de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 1), mais pr\u00e9sente l&rsquo;inconv\u00e9nient de calculs tr\u00e8s lourds et d&rsquo;une vitesse d&rsquo;ex\u00e9cution lente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 l&rsquo;inverse, la famille des <strong>r\u00e9seaux euclidiens<\/strong> (repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e par <strong>HAWK<\/strong>) se distingue par sa rapidit\u00e9 et un excellent \u00e9quilibre de performance g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, bien que la taille de ses signatures reste moyenne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La famille <strong>multivari\u00e9e<\/strong> (la plus nombreuse avec <strong>MAYO<\/strong>, <strong>QR-UOV<\/strong>, <strong>SNOVA<\/strong> et <strong>UOV<\/strong>) propose des signatures ultra-courtes et des v\u00e9rifications tr\u00e8s rapides, mais souffre de cl\u00e9s publiques tr\u00e8s volumineuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enfin, la famille bas\u00e9e sur les primitives sym\u00e9triques et le <strong>MPC-in-the-Head<\/strong> (regroupant <strong>FAEST, MQOM<\/strong> et <strong>SDitH<\/strong>) s&rsquo;appuie sur des hypoth\u00e8ses de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 tr\u00e8s robustes, mais elle paie ce conservatisme par une grande complexit\u00e9 de mise en \u0153uvre et des besoins en ressources de calcul plus importants que les standards primaires.sont donc des proies id\u00e9ales : elles sont encore jeunes, complexes, et d\u00e9ploy\u00e9es par des \u00e9quipes qui manquent parfois de recul<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>Sur quels crit\u00e8res le NIST \u00e9value-t-il les candidats ?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le choix du NIST ne repose pas uniquement sur la beaut\u00e9 des math\u00e9matiques. Pour passer au niveau sup\u00e9rieur, les candidats sont pass\u00e9s au crible selon trois crit\u00e8res stricts :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Les <strong>performances mat\u00e9rielles<\/strong> : la consommation de m\u00e9moire, la vitesse de signature et la charge CPU sur diff\u00e9rents types de puces (des serveurs cloud aux objets connect\u00e9s) sont \u00e9galement des crit\u00e8res de s\u00e9lection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>La <strong>s\u00e9curit\u00e9 th\u00e9orique et pratique<\/strong> : il faut une r\u00e9sistance \u00e9prouv\u00e9e face aux attaques de cryptanalyse publique men\u00e9es par la communaut\u00e9 internationale ces 18 derniers mois.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>L<strong>&lsquo;ad\u00e9quation avec les protocoles Internet<\/strong> : le comportement de l\u2019algorithme lorsqu\u2019il est int\u00e9gr\u00e9 dans des architectures de production r\u00e9elles comme TLS, SSH, IPsec ou DNSSEC est \u00e9valu\u00e9. Si une cl\u00e9 publique est trop volumineuse pour un paquet TCP standard, l&rsquo;algorithme perd des points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 noter que les signatures multivari\u00e9es ont \u00e9t\u00e9 fragilis\u00e9es par des attaques r\u00e9centes. Les \u00e9quipes de UOV, MAYO et SNOVA ont \u00e9t\u00e9 forc\u00e9es de revoir leurs param\u00e8tres de s\u00e9curit\u00e9, montrant ainsi que certains sch\u00e9mas ne sont pas encore totalement stables. Le NIST a d&rsquo;ores et d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9venu qu&rsquo;ils subiraient un calendrier d&rsquo;\u00e9valuation beaucoup plus long et qu&rsquo;ils ne seraient pas standardis\u00e9s \u00e0 l&rsquo;issue de ce troisi\u00e8me tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enfin, il est \u00e9galement int\u00e9ressant d\u2019observer que des solutions sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es \u00e9mergent pour l&rsquo;IoT et les contraintes de bande passante :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pour les environnements r\u00e9seau contraints (ex. : protocoles TLS) : le candidat SQIsign propose la plus petite taille combin\u00e9e de cl\u00e9s et de signatures. S&rsquo;il confirme sa s\u00e9curit\u00e9, il deviendra un candidat id\u00e9al pour remplacer RSA ou l&rsquo;ECC sans saturer la bande passante r\u00e9seau.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pour les syst\u00e8mes embarqu\u00e9s et l&rsquo;IoT : le candidat HAWK se distingue en utilisant exclusivement l&rsquo;arithm\u00e9tique enti\u00e8re (sans virgule flottante) tout en g\u00e9n\u00e9rant des signatures plus petites que le standard actuel FALCON. Au niveau de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 1, une signature HAWK ne p\u00e8se que 555 octets. C&rsquo;est une excellente option \u00e0 anticiper pour la s\u00e9curisation des microcontr\u00f4leurs et des objets connect\u00e9s industriels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>L\u2019urgence de la crypto-agilit\u00e9<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Les candidats ont jusqu&rsquo;au 14 ao\u00fbt 2026 pour soumettre des ajustements mineurs. L\u2019analyse approfondie des candidats du Round 3 devrait durer environ deux ans, nous menant jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 l&rsquo;horizon mi-2028. \u00c0 l\u2019issue de cette phase, le NIST d\u00e9signera les grands gagnants qui viendront enrichir officiellement les standards FIPS de signature \u00e9lectronique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le prochain grand rendez-vous sera la 7e conf\u00e9rence de standardisation PQC que le NIST organisera \u00e0 la fin du printemps ou au d\u00e9but de l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 2027 dans le Maryland pour d\u00e9battre des avanc\u00e9es. Pour les entreprises et les RSSI, le mot d&rsquo;ordre est clair : il ne faut pas attendre 2028 pour agir. L&rsquo;impl\u00e9mentation de solutions crypto-agiles (capables de changer d&rsquo;algorithme de chiffrement ou de signature par simple configuration) est indispensable d\u00e8s aujourd&rsquo;hui pour accueillir sereinement ces futurs boucliers post-quantiques.
